Shapes cut in a symmetrical and asymmetrical fashion invoke how I see a body and emotions – an object or a subject – come together in this tangram to engage in emotional interaction with a space. Using acrylics to add color and M- seal to add texture, this spatial composition is constructed with rawness and playfulness to dig deep into the primary colors, forms, and emotions that preoccupied the mind during childhood – the ripples of which are left in the process of coming of age.
Each of the nine pieces symbolizes one of the navarasas, the 9 emotions of Indian classical performance, in terms of the shape, color, and texture I associate with that emotion. My family members free-played with the pieces and Ipsychoanalyzed their arrangements. The difference in our interpretations of the emotions taught me empathy. For instance, my brother's composition was aligned, reflecting his love for patterns and symmetry while mine was abstract, symbolizing a confused relationship with emotions.
