I created self-portraits portraying differing perspectives on gender and desire. In the first, the bandage symbolizes a rhinoplasty and the light eyes look directly at the viewers with a bold gaze. But I keep my head bowed, a traditional 'bindi' on my forehead and unkept hair covering my bare shoulders. In the second, I look at myself, trying to fit the eurocentric norms of bright lips and light eyes, but still keep myself covered. Inspired by Shirin Alibadi’s ‘Miss Hybrid 3’ this piece directly hints at the state of women in domestic spaces. I didn't want to represent one version as a traditionalist and one as a non-conformist or East vs. West. Instead, by merging elements of both I, wished to recreate the narrative: women should be free to portray themselves in ways they personally wish to be perceived. In art, I find a space to embody this liberating reality and make my audiences encounter their own privilege, with the hope of an exposition leading to shifts in the home space.
